Winter is approaching and now is the perfect time to install a pond heater. Heating a pond through winter is a good way to reduce problems with your fish and prevent expensive ice damage to your pipework and filter.
A simple to install in line electric heater such as one of these AquaFORTE ProfiHeaters is the ideal choice and will be more than capable of maintaining a stable temperature through out winter.
They are available in 1kW – 2kW – 3kW sizes. The heater is supplied pre-wired with 3m of cable and comes with hose tails for flexible pipe. Fittings are also provided to connect to rigid pipe systems. It has a built in thermostat to control the temperature.
In general it is recommended that you allow 1kW of heating potential per 1,000 gallons of pond water. However there are many variables that must be considered.
It is very important to consider pond insulation and to set the heater to a sensible temperature. Running a pond heater without adequate insulation or attempting to raise the pond to a high temperature could result in a costly electric bill.
10c is a good temperature to run the pond at. With good insulation a 1kW heater will have no problem heating a 2,000 gallon pond in all but the most severe of conditions.
