The Importance of Maintaining Healthy Oxygen Levels in Your Pond

The importance of maintaining adequate dissolved oxygen levels in your pond cannot be overstated.
Oxygen is essential for the health of your pond ecosystem. Fish rely on it to breathe, while the beneficial bacteria within your filtration system use it to break down harmful ammonia and nitrites. Oxygen is also required to support the natural decomposition of organic waste and debris.

A common misconception is that adding more aquatic plants will automatically provide sufficient oxygen for fish. While plants do release oxygen during photosynthesis in daylight hours, this process ceases at night. In heavily planted ponds, oxygen levels can actually fall significantly after dark.

Low oxygen levels are often most problematic during the summer months. As water temperatures rise, fish become more active and their oxygen demand increases. At the same time, beneficial bacteria work harder, consuming more oxygen. Unfortunately, warm water is naturally less capable of holding dissolved oxygen, creating the perfect conditions for oxygen shortages.

Recognising the Signs of Low Oxygen
Fish suffering from low oxygen levels may become lethargic, lose interest in feeding, or display signs of stress. Some species may attempt to jump from the water. If fish are congregating around water returns, fountains, or beneath waterfalls, this is often a clear indication that oxygen levels are dangerously low.
In severe cases, fish may be seen gasping for air at the surface.

Should you encounter a situation like this then swift action is needed to prevent the horrible death of your fish. You need to administer emergency triage.

Emergency Action
If you notice signs of oxygen deprivation, immediate action is essential.
Adding fresh water via a hose can help, particularly if the incoming water is sprayed into the pond to create surface disturbance and improve aeration. If available, a spare water pump can be used to agitate the water surface and increase oxygen exchange.

During a recent power cut, one customer successfully improved oxygen levels by repeatedly plunging a brush into the pond, creating turbulence and helping oxygen enter the water more quickly.
However, care should be taken when disturbing pond water. Excessive agitation of deep sediment deposits can release harmful gases, including hydrogen sulphide. If this occurs, a hydrogen peroxide treatment can help re-oxygenate the water and rapidly neutralise hydrogen sulphide. Many pond keepers keep this treatment on hand, particularly if they use potassium permanganate as part of their pond maintenance routine.

Prevention is Better Than Cure
Fortunately, there are several simple steps you can take to prevent oxygen shortages:

  • Avoid excessive plant growth and heavy accumulations of organic debris.
  • Regularly remove excess weeds and clear sludge using a pond vacuum or net.
  • Maintain pumps, filters, waterfalls, and fountains to ensure they remain free-flowing and efficient.
  • Monitor your pond closely during periods of hot weather.

Consider Installing an Air Pump (or an extra one!)
One of the most effective ways to maintain healthy oxygen levels is by installing a dedicated air pump. These systems are simple to fit, economical to run, and can provide invaluable protection during periods of warm weather or increased biological demand.

Even a small air pump, often available for under £20, can make a significant difference and potentially save the lives of your fish. Larger, more powerful models are ideal for heavily stocked or larger ponds, helping to maintain optimum conditions throughout the summer.
We stock a wide range of air pumps, many supplied complete with airline tubing and diffuser stones, providing everything needed for straightforward installation.

Special Summer Offer: Enjoy 20% off all air pumps while stocks last. It’s a simple investment that could make all the difference this summer.
